A Documentary

Walking On

A Window Into an Unseen World

Walking On is an intimate short documentary that follows Karrie Young, an Indigenous flute player from the Muscogee Creek Nation, who volunteers her time and music to comfort those who are crossing over or, as many Native peoples say, “Walking On.”

Through her hauntingly beautiful flute music, Karrie provides a sense of peace and connection in moments that often remain unseen. The film offers a quiet yet profound window into this sacred passage, exploring death not as an ending, but as a bridge between worlds.

At its heart, Walking On is a meditation on one of the few experiences shared by all people everywhere death. Told through the lens of Indigenous art and spirituality, this film bridges the rivers between life and death, culture and belief, past and present.

With a deeply respectful and visually poetic approach, the film explores how Indigenous music serves as both art and ceremony—a way to guide spirits home and bring healing to those left behind.

We hope that Walking On helps open conversations around death and dying, topics often hidden or avoided—and inspires audiences to approach them with compassion and courage.

Through community screenings, storytelling circles, and partnerships with Indigenous organizations, the film will serve as a bridge for dialogue, healing, and understanding.

This project is supported by the Oregon Community Foundation’s Creative Heights Grant and will also partner with Wisdom of the Elders, Oregon Public Broadcasting, Open Signal, and Portland Community College to share this important work across Oregon and beyond.

A cinematic visual tone poem, opening conversations around death and dying

Walking On will be presented as a visual tone poem, a quiet, meditative work emphasizing sound, image, and emotion over narration.

Shot in natural light and largely in black and white, the cinematography will reflect the thin veil between life and death. Viewers will be invited not just to observe, but to feel the experience of “Walking On.”
